D R Downes & Associates - Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy informed by experience, not formula

At D R Downes & Associates, psychotherapy is delivered by senior psychological practitioners, practising since 2008, with experience shaped by complex, high-pressure environments. Across the UK and international clients in UAE & Middle East.

Our work is private or retained support bases, selective, and primarily delivered remotely for clients in the UK and Europe. We offer psychological care that is steady, thoughtful, and shaped by experience not rushed, formulaic, or protocol-driven.

Psychotherapy for Complex Lives

What psychotherapy means here

Psychotherapy is a purposeful, reflective process that supports clarity, understanding, and change over time. It is not simply talking things through, nor about fitting experience into predefined categories. Our way of working is:

  • Thoughtful — paced to allow understanding to develop
  • Relational — grounded in a consistent therapeutic relationship
  • Psychologically informed — shaped by evidence, experience, and judgement
  • Individualised — responsive to the person, not a template

This approach is well suited to people whose lives, work, or responsibilities involve sustained pressure or complexity.

Who we work with

We regularly support adults and couples seeking psychological support for:

  • Persistent stress, overwhelm, or burnout
  • Anxiety or chronic worrying
  • Emotional regulation challenges
  • Trauma or life transitions
  • Relationship and attachment patterns
  • Neurodiversity-related challenges
  •  Complex or long-standing difficulties that don’t fit neatly into categories

Clients often describe their work with us as thoughtful, grounded, and steady, especially when life feels complex or pressures are sustained.

ONE SIZE DOESN'T FIT ALL

Senior Psychological Support

Psychotherapy offers a reflective space to understand patterns, make sense of experience, and develop greater psychological clarity over time.

Our approach is integrative and grounded in a biopsychosocial understanding of human experience, informed by the NSCF–CTA™ framework (Neuro-Somatic Capacity Flexibility — Capacity, Threat, Agency), developed by Rebecca Downes. This framework explores how capacity, threat, and agency interact within the nervous system, helping make sense of why people can become stuck under pressure and how psychological flexibility can gradually be restored.

The work is relational, thoughtful, and responsive — shaped not by a single model, but by clinical experience, professional judgement, and careful attention to what each person needs.

Understanding Capacity, Threat & Agency

The Neuro-Somatic Capacity Flexibility — Capacity, Threat, Agency (NSCF–CTA™) framework, developed by Rebecca Downes, integrates a biopsychosocial understanding of human functioning.

It explores how psychological capacity, perceived threat, and a person’s sense of agency interact within the nervous system during periods of pressure or emotional strain.

By understanding these dynamics, the framework helps guide when it is safe and appropriate to move into deeper therapeutic work, such as processing trauma, grief, or significant life experiences.

Neurodiversity-Aware Psychotherapy

Our work is neurodiversity-aware and informed by specialist training aligned with the UK Adult ADHD Network (UKAAN).

We regularly support neurodivergent adults who are:

  • Exploring self-understanding or late identification
  • Managing burnout, overwhelm, or cognitive load
  •  Managing sensory sensitivities and environmental demands
  • Seeking therapy that adapts to their way of thinking and processing

Our focus is on offering psychologically informed care that recognises difference without oversimplifying it, and that remains centred on what is genuinely helpful.

Resilience vs Flexibility

Supporting your nervous system with capacity, regulation, and clear thinking under pressure.

Alongside psychotherapy, we offer resilience and flexibility-focused psychological support, particularly for individuals working under sustained pressure, demanding roles, or following critical events.

This work is informed by the NSCF–CTA™ framework (Neuro-Somatic Capacity Flexibility — Capacity, Threat, Agency), which explores how psychological capacity, perceived threat, and sense of agency interact within the nervous system under pressure.

Resilience and flexibility are related but not identical:

Resilience focuses on building and restoring capacity, strengthening the resources needed to sustain effort, recover from strain, and remain steady during periods of pressure.

Flexibility refers to the nervous system’s ability to adapt rather than lock into threat responses, allowing thinking, emotion, and physiology to move fluidly rather than becoming stuck in stress or shutdown.

Regulation supports the restoration of agency, helping individuals regain clarity, emotional balance, and the ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.

Where appropriate, practical regulation techniques may also be introduced, including approaches drawn from HeartMath® resilience training, which focuses on heart–brain coherence and physiological regulation under pressure.

As with all our work, support is psychologically grounded, carefully formulated, and tailored to the individual never generic.

How therapy is delivered

We work primarily remotely, supporting clients wherever they are. Remote therapy offers privacy, flexibility, and continuity particularly for those living or working internationally, relocating, or seeking the comfort of familiar surroundings.

A very limited number of in-person sessions are available in London and Chester, by arrangement, where clinically appropriate and availability allows.

What to expect

Psychotherapy with us typically begins with a private conversation about what has led you to seek support and what you hope for from the work. From there, therapy develops collaboratively, with regular sessions that allow space for reflection, understanding, and change.

The work can sometimes be challenging, but our aim is for it to feel contained, steady, and humane, especially when life feels pressured or uncertain.

Is this the right fit?

Our approach tends to suit people who:

  • Prefer private, self-funded psychological care
  • Value experience, judgement, and continuity
  • Are comfortable working remotely
  • Are seeking thoughtful, non-formulaic therapy

If you are looking for brief, highly structured, or insurance-led treatment, this may not be the right setting. If you are looking for experienced psychological care that can hold complexity and pressure, you are welcome to get in touch.

Independent Practitioners Working to Professional Standards

Therapy is provided by individual practitioners, each working independently and in accordance with their own professional accreditation, insurance, and ethical obligations.
